Map

The IFRC-SRU has three objectives.  Each of our projects is aligned with one or more objectives as well as with the Global Shelter and Settlements Plan.

 MAPPING of shelter and settlement:

With a focus on emergency and interim shelter, the IFRC-SRU collates technical shelter and material solutions developed and implemented by National Red Cross Red Crescent Societies and others where relevant.[dropdown_box expand_text=” read more ” show_more=”” show_less=”” start=”hide”] This mapping is complemented by technical analysis to identify and promote  emerging best practice, according to agreed criteria. This information is centralised in an on-line database , and made available to shelter practitioners to make informed choices after disasters and to guide and contribute ongoing technical research and innovation

Shelter and Settlement ITEMS:

The IFRC-SRU  supports the improvement and innovation of standard emergency shelter response items, both shelter solutions such as shelter kits and tents as well as components and fixings. [dropdown_box expand_text=” read more ” show_more=”” show_less=”” start=”hide”] This includes consideration of new and innovative technologies, including those routinely submitted  to IFRC by private sector and academic entities, and the evolution of familiar or traditional technologies, materials and solutions as appropriate. The focus remains on ensuring simplicity of use at field level, local replicability where possible, and scaleability through pre-positioning and local or regional sourcing. [/dropdown_box]

TESTING shelter and settlement solutions:

The IFRC-SRU will provide a platform for the testing and optimization of shelter solutions, materials and components, through its own field testing facilities [dropdown_box expand_text=” read more ” show_more=”” show_less=”” start=”hide”] and the commissioning and oversight of laboratory and other tests from commercial and academic research centres. Testing will focus on construction techniques, defined shelter solutions and materials, climatic performance and scaleability, and the emerging best practices identified through the previous two engagement areas.
